Forward Deployed Engineer
The career guide for the engineers who take AI — and complex software — from demo to production inside real customer environments.
A Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) embeds with a customer, turns messy constraints into a working system, and owns outcomes — not just tickets. In the AI era, that usually means getting models, agents, and retrieval systems running under enterprise security, data quality, and workflow realities.
The title was popularized by Palantir (often as Forward Deployed Software Engineer / FDSE). It is now used across AI labs and enterprise platforms — OpenAI, Anthropic, Scale AI, Databricks, Anduril, Salesforce Agentforce, and many others — sometimes under adjacent names like AI Deployment Engineer.

Why the role exists
Buying a model or a platform is easy. Making it survive production inside a Fortune 500 (or a defense network) is not. Standard multi-tenant SaaS cannot absorb every customer's identity stack, air-gapped network, legacy CRM, or compliance regime.
FDEs close that last mile: discovery → scoped build → deployment → adoption measurement → product feedback. They are the reason “AI transformation” stops being a slide deck.
What Forward Deployed Engineers actually do
- Customer discovery — turn vague executive asks into technical scope and success metrics
- Design under constraints — SSO/SAML, VPC or air-gapped networks, dirty data, rate limits, change management
- Build and integrate — production code, pipelines, agents/RAG, evals, observability
- Ship and operate — rollouts, incident response with the customer, documentation that others can run
- Close the loop — feed field lessons back into the core product so the next deployment is cheaper
A useful mental model: Engineer + consultant + field PM, with real production accountability.

Comp varies wildly by employer class. Public reporting and Levels-style bands commonly show:
- Palantir FDSE — often cited median TC around the low– mid $200Ks, with senior bands much higher
- Top AI labs (OpenAI, Anthropic, similar) — mid-to-senior packages frequently discussed in the mid–high $300Ks to $500K+ TC range, equity-heavy
- Enterprise / data platforms (e.g. Databricks) — commonly mid $200Ks median TC depending on level and equity
