How to become a Forward Deployed Engineer

Most FDEs are transfers, not new grads of a special major. Close the gaps your background leaves open, then prove you can ship under customer constraints.

Who this path is for

  • Software engineers — strong builders who lack customer-facing delivery stories
  • Solutions / sales engineers — strong with customers, need deeper production code proof
  • Consultants / applied ML — need productized delivery and sharper engineering ownership

New-grad FDE pipelines exist at some firms (notably Palantir-style programs), but the broader market still favors people who can show shipped systems plus judgment.

The five-step transition

  1. Map your gaps using the skills matrix and readiness assessment
  2. Build AI production literacy — RAG, evals, basic agents, observability — beyond chat demos
  3. Collect customer-shaped stories — ambiguity, pushback, tradeoffs, measurable outcomes
  4. Write 1–2 deployment case studies (even personal / open-source “customer simulation” projects count if honest)
  5. Target interview loops that match your profile — see FDE interview questions

30-day plan

  • Week 1: pick target companies; read 10 real FDE JDs; list recurring skills
  • Week 2: ship a small production-shaped project (API + auth + eval harness)
  • Week 3: write one case study in FDE format (problem → constraints → build → impact)
  • Week 4: mock a decomp/case interview; rewrite resume bullets for outcomes

90-day plan

  • Days 1–30: foundation project + story inventory (above)
  • Days 31–60: second project with enterprise constraints (SSO mock, rate limits, messy CSV, evaluation rubric)
  • Days 61–90: apply in batches; company-specific prep (Palantir decomp, OpenAI applied, etc.); keep a failure log from interviews

If you are a SWE today

Your coding bar is often fine. Gaps are usually discovery, executive communication, and “I owned adoption, not just merge.” Practice saying no to bad scope. Read FDE vs SWE.

Resume and portfolio signals recruiters look for

  • Quantified delivery in messy environments (latency, adoption, cost, error rate)
  • Evidence of integration work (identity, data, third-party APIs)
  • Clear ownership language (“I decided / I negotiated / I measured”)
  • AI systems that include evals and failure modes — not only happy-path demos
